Forventningspress fremstilt gjennom gutter i ungdomslitteraturen

Abstract

Formålet med denne masteroppgaven er å undersøke hvordan forventningspress blir fremstilt i to ungdomsromaner, og hvordan romanenes etiske dilemmaer kan utvikle leserens narrative forestillingsevne. De to ungdomsromanene avhandlingen tar utgangspunkt i er Bare spille ball av Michael Stilson og Alt jeg skylder deg er juling av Arne Svingen. Masteroppgavens problemstilling er formulert på følgende måte: Hvordan fremstilles forventningspress i ungdomsromanene Bare spille ball og Alt jeg skylder deg er juling, og på hvilke måter kan romanenes etiske dilemmaer utvikle leserens narrative forestillingsevne? Romanene vil bli analysert hver for seg, der analysene tar utgangspunkt i det indre og ytre forventningspresset de litterære karakterene føler på, hvordan romanene kan utvikle leserens narrative forestillingsevne og hvilke etiske dilemmaer romanene presenterer. Analysene av romanene vil suppleres med teori om litteraturetikk, teori om mentalisering og teori knyttet opp mot forventningspress i idrett og vold. Videre vil oppgaven analysere romanene i et komparativt lys, der funnene fra analysedelen sammenliknes og drøftes. Selv om romanene fremstiller to ulike former for forventningspress, viser funnene mine at det er flere likheter i hvordan hovedkarakterene opptrer. Både Bare spille ball og Alt jeg skylder deg er juling er skrevet med intern fokalisering. Intern fokalisering skaper rom for at leseren kan finne identifikasjon i fortellingene, og dermed også rom for å utvikle sine mentaliserende evner. På den måten vil også romanene åpne for at leseren kan utvikle sin narrative forestillingsevne. Den narrative forestillingsevnen handler om å kunne sette seg inn i andres livssituasjon, og på den måten utvikle menneskets moralske samhandling i møte med andre. Leseren vil kunne få nye perspektiver og lærdom om hvordan omstendigheter kan utvikle og transformere mennesker som er like eller ulike oss selv. Selv om romanene kan utvikle leserens narrative forestillingsevne, er det likevel et poeng at romanene kan leses og tolkes på ulike måter. Unge lesere har forskjellige erfaringer og ferdigheter, som påvirker samspillet mellom teksten og leseren. Uavhengig av dette inviterer både Michael Stilson og Arne Svingen leseren til etisk refleksjon gjennom de litterære hovedkarakterene og deres handlinger. Forfatternes fortellermåte bringer med seg verdifulle retningslinjer leseren på en eller annen måte må ta stilling til.

The pourpose of this master thesis is to examine how the difference in expecations, are in two chosen youth novels, and in what way the ethical dilemmas in the novels can develop the readers narrative imagination. The youth novels used for this thesis are Bare spille ball, written by Michael Stilson and Alt jeg skylder deg er juling, written by Arne Svingen. The topic at hand is: ”How is expectation presented in Bare Spille ball and Alt jeg skylder deg er juling, and how does the etichal dilemmas in the novels develop the readers narrative imagination?”. The novels will be analyzed separately. First of, the analysis are based on the expectations the characters have of themselves and what expectations others have of them. Second of, the thesis is analyzing how the novels can develop the readers narrative imagination, and what etichal dillemmas the novels presents. The analysis are supplemented with theory about literary etichs, Theory of Mind, and theory that adresses how young adults can have expectations when it comes to sports and violence. Third of, the thesis will analyze the novels in a comparative light, where the findings from the analysis are compared, and then discussed. Although the novels present two different types of expectation, my findings shows that there are several similarities in behavioral between the main characters. Both novels are written with internal focalizations. The internal focalizations presents the reader with the possibility to identify with the characters, along with the ability to develop the readers narrative imagination. The readers own narrative imaginations as a tool, makes it possible for the reader to understand others trough literatur, and affect how they act in real life. The reader can be able to gain new perspectives on how different circumstances can transform people who are similar or different from themselves. With the novels as a beacon of guiding light, it is the experience of the reader and ability to insert themselves in different scenarios that they are presented with, that decides how they interpret the novel and characters. Independent of the reader, it is the two writers, Michael Stilson and Arne Svingen, that creates the ground work and sets the guidelines for the reader to reflect throughout the novels.
