This study is about adapted teaching in mathematics. The study´s research question is: How does the teacher adapt their teaching during students` work with investigative and problem-solving tasks? A qualitative approach has been used, combined with a semi-structured interview. Three teachers participated. Each teacher carried out a one-hour lesson in their eight grade classes, before an interview afterwards. The first part of the analysis explored the content and the openness in the tasks the teachers used. The second part analyses the interviews with the teachers. Subject didactics theory, which contains Yeo’s openness framework and the model of mathematical competence by Niss and Jensen, and pedagogical principles are used in the analysis. The way in which the teachers choose their tasks and implement subject didactics theory principles as well as pedagogical principles during the lessons, are discussed in regard to mathematical learning outcome, together with the students´ perceptions of autonomy, competence and relatedness. Results indicate that teachers are using subject didactic principles and pedagogical actions which can support students´ perceptions of autonomy, competence and relatedness.en_US
