Bauhaus is supposed to have had an unprecedented impact on the development of Modernism. This view also comprises Statens håndverks- og kunstindustriskole. The reality was more complex. The reforms were led by Rector Jacob Prytz. In the period between the wars, Deutscher Werkbund and Le Corbusier constituted the main ideals. Knut Knutsen’s teaching of form was the most significant expression of inspiration from Bauhaus. In the postwar era, the Illinois Institute of Design in Chicago was the leading ideal, which led to a polarization between industrial design and crafts. The underlying problematics at both Bauhaus and SHKS were how aesthetic quality could be maintained in industrial production.
