This master's thesis seeks to increase the empirical evidence related to competence development among managers in the kindergarten sector. It is well documented that the quality of kindergarten services depends on the competence of the employees. Competence development is clearly emphasized in various strategic plans, and it was therefore interesting to investigate what kind of competence the managers themselves believe they need to perform the tasks they are responsible for. The aim of the study was to capture common features among the nine informants who participated in the survey and, based on this, arrive at a more general description of the topic. The main findings from the survey show that all managers agree that the kindergarten teacher education does not in any way provide students with the professional competence needed in the role of manager. In addition, all managers with relevant further education agree that formal further education in management, or other subjects relevant to the manager role, is absolutely necessary to obtain the required competence. The manager without further education emphasizes internal management courses and coaching as crucial. The findings also show that the informants experience personnel management as the most demanding aspect of the role. The high sickness absence in the sector is the main reason for this. In addition, it is emphasized that managers must have knowledge and awareness of their leadership style, as employees in the kindergarten have very different education, experience, motivation, and age. There is therefore a need to adapt communication, demands, and expectations to the different employees. In conclusion, the majority of managers conclude that formal further education is the most useful for raising the competence of managers. They believe that it has given them good tools to stand more confidently in the leadership position. Internal management courses, professional networks, and mentoring schemes are also highlighted as good measures.en_US
