Abstract
Through in-depth interviews with auditors, accountants and other parties who work with
financial fraud investigation, we examine what expectations are placed on auditors and their
work in conjunction with preventing and detecting accounting fraud. We find that the
respondents’ perceptions of society´s expectations placed on auditors to prevent and detect
accounting fraud are too high. This is due to lack of knowledge of what an auditor´s job
entails. On the other hand, the analysis states that the expectations of the authorities and
other parties who understand accounting fraud and what auditing entails, are not too high. We
therefore conclude that it is interpreted that the less knowledge one has of what auditing
entails, the higher the expectations.
