Improving image accessibility through touchup information

Image is pictorial scripts or visual artifacts that are two-dimensional that resembles a subject that is usually a physical object. People with visibility disabilities find it challenging to access the image as it requires an equivalent image description to make it accessible. Due to its small size, it is even more challenging to make the image accessible on mobile devices. But there are different methods to make the image accessible for all. The developer can give alternative text for images on the web and content description on mobile to the images made accessible. But the problem arises when we try to access the image from the galley or the recently clicked image. We cannot find any method to add the content description or alternative text on the recent images on the mobile phone. So we can see a clear gap for image accessibility in mobile devices. During the literature study, many works have been done for the object detection on the image, image segmentation, and we can find many attempts to fill the gap but still visually impaired person are still facing image accessibility problem in mobile devices. This research aims to fill the existing gap by design and develop an android prototype application to provide an accessible interface to access images for visually impaired people. The developed prototype mainly focuses on the interface part rather than other elements like image processing, object detection, or user notifications. The developed user interface will detect the finger movement in the application and will locate all the coordinates the finger has passed, and if the finger passes through the object, the prototype will notify the user about the object. The research was conducted with the help of 24 respondents. The results from this research show that the developed interface which uses gesture (touch and slide) was easy to use and make the image accessible to the participants in the research. The touchup information makes it easy to understand the image, and combining two or more feedback methods helps visually impaired people to identify objects in the image.
