In this master thesis we wanted to explore health promoting leadership and how governors in the Correctional Services facilitate physical activity among the employees. We have studied what promotes and inhibits the room for maneuver among the governors in order to be able to offer measures for physical activity in the workplace. In this study we have interviewed six governors. Through individual interviews, the leaders have shared their experiences, opinions and reflections on physical activity as a health promoting measure. Our findings are linked to national and international obligations and guidelines where physical activity and health promoting work are central, through theories of management and leadership in the public sector, health promoting management, and management documents in the Correctional Services. Working as a prison officer requires physical and mental prerequisites to be able to ensure safety in prison in a good way, and requirements are set for health and physics when admitting for the prison officer education. The Correctional Services makes no demands on physical fitness after graduation and in the practice of the profession. The governors believe this is a logical flaw. The survey shows that prison officers have imposed requirements for training and regular exercises in the use of physical force, but that this alone does not provide the employees with a physical form that reflects the physical admission requirements. The findings show that the governors see many positive health and work environment effects by offering employees schemes for physical activity and perceive it as a "reasonable and long-term investment". They show commitment to physical activity and health promoting values in their leadership, but the attitudes are influenced and limited by a lack of central priorities, resources and a demanding financial- and staffing situation. Findings show that the governors are concerned with value- and relationship management, which can be related to theories of health promoting leadership.en_US
