Utviklingen av et skolebibliotek i en flerkulturell kontekst

Abstract

Tema for denne avhandlingen er utvikling av skolebibliotek i en flerkulturell skole. Jeg undersøker hvilke arbeidsoppgaver en pedagog med en funksjon som skolebibliotekar har i en tidlig fase av utvikling av et skolebibliotek som skal fungere som en læringsarena. Forskningsspørsmålene er følgende: Hva er skolebibliotekarens arbeidsoppgaver? Hvordan arbeider skolebibliotekaren med litteraturbasert undervisning på skolebiblioteket ved Trollskogen skole? Forskningsspørsmålene undersøkes i lys av sosiokulturell læringsteori, forskning om biblioteket som læringsarena, og teori om litterasitet og tospråklighet. Dette er en kvalitativ studie som inngår i forskningsprosjektet Multiplisitet, myndiggjøring, medborgerskap. Inkludering gjennom bruk av biblioteket som læringsarena (2007-2011). Undersøkelsen er gjennomført høsten 2010 på en barneskole med 77 % minoritetsspråklige elever. Metoden er observasjon på skolebiblioteket og kvalitative intervjuer med rektor og skolebibliotekar. Resultatene viser at utviklingen av skolebiblioteket i en flerkulturell skole avhenger av skolens pedagogiske grunnsyn og forhold til forskning. Trollskogen skole prioriterer tospråklig undervisning og skolebibliotekaren utvikler bokstammen med litteratur på norsk og minoritetselevenes morsmål. På skolebiblioteket forgår litteraturbasert undervisning på norsk og minoritetelevenes morsmål. I denne avhandlingen fokuserer jeg på skolebibliotekarens arbeid med litteraturbasert undervisning på norsk. Utvikling av skolebiblioteket omfatter bokinnkjøp, utvikling av en plan for alle klassers bruk av skolebiblioteket, utvikling av skolebiblioteket som et annerledes rom, rutiner for bruk av rommet, kvalifisering av elevbibliotekarer, tilgang til bokkasser i klasserommet for alle klasser på trinnet, og samarbeid med lærerne. Arbeidsoppgavene er komplekse, men Trollskogen har en meget dedikert skolebibliotekar som gir gode resultater i en oppstartsfase. En skolebibliotekar som er pedagog og tilhører skolens personale, har fordel av å kjenne skolekulturen når det gjelder samarbeid med lærerne om utvikling av skolebiblioteket som en differensiert læringsarena. Samtidig er det en utfordring å inneha en bibliotekfunksjon uten bibliotekfaglig kompetanse. Det er mye skolebibliotekaren må lære underveis. Skolebibliotekaren innehar en nøkkelrolle som forandringsagent i arbeidet med å integrereskolebiblioteket i det pedagogiske arbeidet ved skolen. Rektors prioritering av skolebiblioteket samarbeid med skolebibliotekaren er her av avgjørende betydning.

The theme of this thesis is the development and progress of a school library in a multicultural school. I have examined the tasks a school librarian is responsible for in the early stages of establishing a school library that will also serve as a learning arena in the future. My research questions are as following: What are the school librarian’s tasks? How does the school librarian work with literature-based instruction at Trollskogen School’s school library? The research questions are examined with respect to the socio-cultural learning theory, research on the library itself as a learning arena and theory around literacy bilingualism. This is a qualitative study that is included in the research project Multiplisitet, myndiggjøring, medborgerskap. Inkludering gjennom bruk av biblioteket som læringsarena (2007-2011). The survey was conducted in autumn of 2010 at a primary school with 77% minority students. The methods used include observation of the school library and qualitative interviews with the principal and the school librarian. The results indicate that the development of the school library in a multicultural school depends on the school's educational views and its relationship to research. Trollskogen School gives priority to bilingual education and the school librarian engages in collecting literature on Norwegian and the minority students’ native languages. In the school library the literature-based teaching takes place in Norwegian as well as the minority students' native language. In this thesis, I focus on the school library's work on literature-based instruction in Norwegian. Development of the school library includes buying books, scheduling when all the classes will use the library, utilization of the school library as a different space, procedures for the use of library room, qualifying pupil librarians, provide bookcases with literature in all classrooms, and collaboration with teachers. The tasks are complex, but as Trollskogen has a very dedicated school librarian we can observe good results in the starting period of establishing a school library. A school librarian who is already a part of the school staff will have the benefits of knowing the school’s culture in terms of working with the rest of the staff regarding the progress of the school library as a differentiated learning arena. At the same time, there is a challenge to have a library functioning appropriately without a library professional’s expertise. There is a lot the school librarian must learn along the way. The school librarian has the key role as the change agent in the effort to integrate the school library with the educational work at the school. The principal’s priorities when it comes to the school library and cooperation with the school librarian are of crucial importance in the work of developing the school library as a differentiated learning arena.
