Learning-based treatment of alcohol and drug abuse Scientific evidence supports the conclusion that reinforcement is crucial in the development and maintenance of substance abuse,as well as its remission. This articlereviews research from laboratory, clinic, and naturalistic settings examining the role of reinforcement in substance use. Well-controlled studies reveal orderly interactions between drug self administration, its reinforcing consequencesand the environmental context in which the drug taking occurs. These orderly interactions have important implicationsfor the development of efficacious interventions.Studies on treatmentoutcomes of voucher-based contingency management and community reinforcement, demonstrate how behavior principlescan be used to improve outcomes across a wide range of different substance use problems and treatment settings.Recent research has focused on two main challenges:(1) Can treatment protocols be refined and improved to the extent that even the most treatment-resistant patientsattain abstinence?(2) How can the gap betweenresearch-based treatment and standardclinical practice be reduced?
