dc.description.abstract | Learning-based treatment of alcohol and drug abuse Scientific evidence supports the conclusion that reinforcement is crucial in the development and maintenance of substance abuse,as well as its remission. This article
reviews research from laboratory,clinic,
and naturalistic settings examining the role of reinforcement in substance use. Well-controlled studies reveal orderly interactions between drug self administration, its reinforcing consequences
and the environmental context in which the drug taking occurs. These orderly interactions have important implications
for the development of efficacious interventions.Studies on treatment
outcomes of voucher-based contingency management and community reinforcement, demonstrate how behavior principles
can be used to improve outcomes across a wide range of different substance use problems and treatment settings.
Recent research has focused on two main challenges:(1) Can treatment protocols be refined and improved to the extent that even the most treatment-resistant patients
attain abstinence?(2) How can the gap between
research-based treatment and standard
clinical practice be reduced? | en_US |
