This study investigates, using qualitative methods, how librarians in small academic libraries are working to support research. In phase 1, to find out how they work today, 7 single interviews were conducted and thematically analyzed. In phase 2 a focus group interview with 5 of the informants from phase 1 was conducted to find out what they thought about the future. Kuhlthau’s model of mediation was used to analyze the results, together with Daland & Hidle’s use of the model in research support. The informants were working at all levels of Kuhlthau’s model, and some even with more. Therefore, to get a full overview, the model was extended with a level 6 Researcher for this study. Abbot, Cox & Corral, and Seminelli were used to analyze the results in view of the profession. The most important findings are that Open Access still leads to new tasks and services. Administration of collection for better dissemination and retrieval will be more important in the future. The skills as librarians, together with computer skills were deemed to be the most useful skills in the future. The greatest challenge is to show why and how these skills are important to the institutions.
