Abstract
There are over one hundred references to slaves and slavery in The New Testament. Traditionally, translators have preferred to translate the terms referring to slavery with ‘servant’. This article provides a critical and extensive reviewofthe NorwegianBible Society’s translations – NO 1930, NO 1978/85, and Bibel 2011 – of slave terminology in the NT (doulos, pais, oiket¯ es and s¯oma). It demonstrates that the translations obscure the full presence of slaves and slavery in the NT and early Christianity. It concludes that terms referring to unfree humans should consistently be translated as ‘slave’.
