alltid bevisste i sine handlinger.
Case-studien viser til to ulike
Ni
kommunikasjonstiltak settes inn i en større teoretisk kontekst om kognitive prinsipper,
valgarkitektur og nudge-teori. Funnene viser at kunnskap om de kognitive systemene vil
kunne spisse kommunikasjonstiltak for å få endring i atferd.
This Masters thesis addresses how fashion and consumption can be successfully
combined in a sustainable business concept. The approach will look at how a fashion
business communicates with the customer with the main idea that “green” clothes must be
sold in a “green” way. But consumer habits are hard to break, and the field of behavioural
theory explains that humans are not as conscious of how they make decisions as they think
-a view that is helpful in understanding why a person’s intentions do not always match
his/her behaviour. Hence, knowledge about people’s cognitive systems can be an
advantage when trying to encourage sustainable consumption. The research questions in
this thesis will 1. Look at how a fashion business based on knowledge about cognitive
systems can influence the consumer to sustainable, moderate consumption, and 2. How
this awareness can give a basis for the development of new sustainable and profitable
business concepts. Research methods involve literature studies and a case study of the
fashion business SØLV, a clothing brand, which in its attempt to be sustainable tried two
different business models. The case study included an interview and a survey, collecting
information about the business from the customers’ perspective. Findings include nine
communication initiatives that are discussed in context of cognitive principles, choicearchitecture
and nudge theory. Results show that insight in cognitive systems can have a
significant effect on peoples’ choices that can lead to more sustainable consumer
behaviour. Based on the acquired insight, a draft for a sustainable business concept with a
new set of communication approaches is presented with the aim to inspire entrepreneurs in
the fashion business aiming to be “green”. Concluding remarks is that an in-depth
understanding is important, especially when there is a message to send, changes to initiate
and behaviour to affect. The thesis ends on the note to test the new communication
approaches in real life.
