Kva rolle har bibliotekaren og bibliotekets informasjonsressursar for ph.d.-kandidatar og deira forskingsprosess?

Abstract

Målet med dette prosjektet er å identifisere kva bibliotektenester og informasjonsressursar ph.d-kandidatar bruker og har behov for. Doktorgradskandidatar har høg motivasjon for læring og lever opp til forventninga om at dei skal klare seg sjølve. Dei meiner sjølve at dei er det vi bibliotekarar forstår som informasjonskompetente og informasjonssøking er ein del av kvardagspraksisen deira. Dei tilpassar søkemetodar til ulike kontekstar. Nøsting er ein viktig metodikk for å finne litteratur, men òg systematisk søking vert brukt. Bruken av bibliotekets databasar er komplementær med Google Scholar. Kandidatane har hatt rettleiing og undervisning av bibliotekar i ulike samanhengar, men sidan kandidatane opplever at eigne ferdigheiter er tilfredstillande oppsøker dei ikkje bibliotekar for ytterlegare hjelp. I den grad bibliotekaren spelar ei rolle som rettleiar for ph.d.-kandidatane i forskingsprosessen deira er det i samband med søketeknikk og rettleiing i Endnote. Her har informantane så gode erfaringar at dei ønskjer at biblioteket skal utvide rettleiingstenestene til òg å gjelde anna forskingsstøtte som rettleiing i programvare som NVivo og SpSS.

The aim of this project is to identify what library services and information resources Ph.D. candidates use and need. Doctoral candidates have a high motivation for learning and they live up to the expectation that they will manage themselves. They look at themselves as information literate. Information searches are part of their everyday tasks. They adapt information searching methods to different contexts. Reference tracking is an important methodology for finding literature, but also subject searches are common. The candidates' use of the library's databases are complementary with their use of Google Scholar. Candidates have been tutored and taught by librarians in various areas, but since the candidates feel that their own skills are satisfactory they do not ask a librarian for further assistance. To the extent that the librarian plays a role as a supervisor for Ph.D. candidates in their research process, it is in connection with the searching techniques and guidance in Endnote. Here, informants are so skilled that they want the library to expand counseling services to also applying to other types of research support e.g. on software like NVivo and SpSS.
