This thesis examines how art, and the galleries can contribute to representation of minorities and inclusion of diversity. The thesis is based on the Munch Museum´s last exhibition on Tøyen, Give me a name. The museum invited the audience into a previously closed institutional process, where they asked for help. They sought the audience’s assistance in revising the titles to the portraits of Sultan Abdul Karem. The museum explained that the reason for the change is based on the titles racist nature. The exhibition generated a significant amount of debate and raised questions regarding preservation of our history. Give me a name opened in 2021. This thesis will also examine the changes that have occurred in the art community since then and is ongoing. The research question of this study is: How can the representation of minorities be explored through the curatorial project Give me a name? The thesis will explore the curatorial project behind the exhibition and analyze the audience’s diverse receptions of it. Furthermore, it will examine the underlaying themes of the exhibition, that includes revision of titles, how to preserve our history from the viewing point of contemporary attitudes, and racism. This is achieved through an examination of various media texts, which are subjected to a visual analysis inspired by Gillian Rose´s on discourse analysis. The methodology employed in this study is drawn from Rose`s theory, presented in her book: Visual Methodologies; an introduction to researching with visual materials, and drawing inspiration from chapter 9: Discourse analysis II institutions and ways of seeing. The thesis also draws upon Dag Solhjell´s: Formidler og formidlet. The primary aim of this thesis is to explore how art is foster debate and solidarity while promoting inclusivity and representation. Through investigation of the institutional processes behind Give me a name and analyzing the reactions of its intended audience, it aims to determine whether there is a significant difference between inclusion and representation.en_US
