Background: Pressure ulcers are a well known complication of the prone position within the intensive care unit. Prevention is an important part of the intensive care nurse's work, and preventive measures should be implemented as early as possible. Systematic literature reviews are important tools in knowledge based work, as they provide an evidence -based, theoretical introduction within a topic that can be applied to practice. By using up-to-date knowledge, and through continuous monitoring, complications of medical treatment, including prone position, can be prevented.
Method: Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analysis (PRISMA) were used as the method, and the article is designed according to the PRISMA checklist.
Results: The master's thesis is a knowledge based systematic literature review based on a systematic search for knowledge. Results from included primary studies show that preventive measures must be implemented even before the intensive care patient is placed in the prone position and continued further after the patient has been placed in the prone position.
Conclusion: The intensive care nurse has an overall responsibility to protect the intensive care patient from complications and/or injuries in connection with examinations and treatment, including prone position. Prevention is a continuous process. Systematic literature reviews are contributing to knowledge based practice and work, and can raise the intensive care nurse's competence and increase patient safety. Based on the findings in this systematic literature review, preventive measures must be implemented even before the intensive care patient is placed in the prone position, and continued throughout the treatment period.
