Master i estetiske fagen
Utdanningens samfunnsetiske perspektiver står sentralt i oppgaven.
In the autumn of 2016, Søssa Jørgensen and Yngvild Færøy in cooperation with Tenthaus Oslo, held a five-day workshop with young adults who receive primary education at Hersleb high school. The workshop was called Who are you?. The students participating in the workshop were from several different countries, including Afghanistan, Rwanda and Somalia. This thesis is an examination of Jørgensen and Færøy’s workshop. This thesis is part of the master’s degree «Art in society» at the Oslo University College. The purpose of this thesis is to examine how the concept of learning can be questioned and developed through contemporary art in relation with the school. Another objective is to look at how artist-run projects in schools can facilitate functional academic connections between art and education. The societal-ethical perspectives of education are central to this thesis, and I will therefore use policy guidelines for education and current Nordic discourse around aesthetics and education policy as background material for my discussion of the topics at hand. The thesis draws on aesthetic and didactic perspectives, and seeks to apply an aesthetic - pragmatic study between the areas of perception and reflection. The thesis consists of four chapters. Following the introduction, chapter two will focus on how a social and artistic project in a school setting, can affect possible tensions between the autonomous and the applied perspective on contemporary art. Furthermore, how the artists who occupies this position, often change their artistic tools to incorporate societal and ethical issues. The hypothesis is that through creating an emancipated learning space for young adults one enables an integration between sensibility and sensuousness. To determine if this hypothesis is validated, I will look at the implementation of the workshop Who are you? Here the focus is on how the project’s aesthetic and process-oriented methods opens up a form of learning where sensuousness makes a considerable impact. Finally, the thesis examines if the ambition to get students to «open up, get out there and use their voices» are met, in a further discussion of the project's goals and objectives. The discussion concludes in the fourth and final chapter where I will present the progressive didactic ideas of the French philosopher Jacques Rancière, as a hypothetical possibility of further development of the concept of learning.en
