In this study, we develop and test a model that links consultants’ experience of psychological contracts in the consulting company to the relationship they have with the client company where they work daily, and thereafter various important outcomes. To make new contributions to existing research, we collected cross-sectional data using an electronic survey. The survey was sent to 135 consultants in the IT and building/construction industry, and we received 99 responses (73 % response rate). Our expectation before we tested out our model was that a psychological contract breach in the consulting company would have positive “carry over effects” in an economic exchange relationship with the client, and negative effects in a social exchange relationship with the client. We found support for this theory in our study. Furthermore, we assumed that the type of exchange relationship itself would affect outcomes such as organizational commitment, extra role behavior and turnover intention in the client company. Our findings suggest that psychological contracts have "carry over effects" and will affect the tripartite relationship between consultant, consulting company and client company. Implications for theory and practice will be discussed.en
