In this master thesis, I have studied the effect an implementation of a web-scale discovery service has had on the usage of a library's electronic resources. A web-scale discovery service is a type of search solution allowing users to perform searches within an index with pre-harvested information from a variety of sources, including the integrated library catalog. The core idea of web-scale discovery services is to make users' access to the publications of the library easier. This way the users can easily get an overview of which resources and publications they can get access to or order via the library. The literature review shows that most academic institutions implementing a discovery tool experience an increased usage of their electronic resources. I used the energy company Statoil ASA as case, and studied the effect by examining the COUNTER statistics report Journal report 1 (JR1) over number of successful full-text article requests from a selection of Elsevier journals during the period 2011 – 2016. The implementation of the discovery service Primo in 2013 coincides with a distinct increase in the number of successful full-text article requests, but further examination of the statistics from the link resolver SFX, used with Primo, shows that this change in this case cannot be credited Primo.
