Everyone has a mother, which gives us all conceptions of what maternity is and entail. This thesis explaines the dominating conceptions of motherhood in our time. The source material is newspaper articles from Norway. Newspapers are a sensitive barometer of conceptions in our society, and provide a circular influence on our society. The strategy and methods of analyzing is based on Norman Faircloughs principles of discourse analysis and Focaults theories about power. In my analyzis I have found three conceptions that dominates motherhood beliefs in our time; the conception of «mother blaming», the conception of «middelclass parenthood», and lastly the conception of «unconditional maternal love». I will show how the concept of motherhood can be connected to the concept of children as a legal entity. This is a thesis for a family treatment program, and the aim is to increase the focus on different conceptions in working with families. After the analysis part you will get to learn about Lise and her family, when the three conceptions will be understood through the family’s treatment process. The narration will show how the conceptions influence the identities, relations and the ability to act for both the family members and the therapist. If the mothers do not live up to the normative conceptions in our society, it may create family secrets, guilt and shame. It can create serious symptoms in both the whole family entity as well as one person in the family. The family therapist can use methods as «friendly disrespect», deconstructions and «discomfort zone» to help families to create their acceptance spiral. Which again can remove family secrets and taboos, reduce guilt and shame, as well as give foundation for other identities, relations and increase the ability to act. The thesis is written from a perspective of social constructionism, and with that I will highlight that all knowledge is constructed «conceptions». Valid knowledge is based on the situation, relations and individuals included – it must be adapted in each and every situation and have an attitude that entails «friendly disrespect».en_US
