These two articles address the subject of self-organization in network centric organizations in general, and in the Norwegian Armed Forces in particular. The first article starts with an introduction to Network Centric Warfare, followed by a presentation of the term self-synchronization. A brief presentation of the main concepts in complexity science is presented, before an introduction to the science of self-organization. Then a historical overview followed by the characteristics of self-organizing systems. First, the discussion revolves around the possible differences between self-synchronization and self-organization. Second, to discuss if a complex science approach can be applied to consider if network centric organization might facilitate self-organization or self-synchronization processes. The discussion will also address some of the experiments that have been conducted in that topic. The second article contains a quasi-experimental design in the context of a case-study. The framework of the quasi-experiment is the Norwegian Army, in which two battalions are represented as an experiment group and a control group respectively. The objective of the experiment was to see if the implementation of new technology, represented by a blue-force-tracking system named FACNAV, has changed and increased the ability of the units to self-organize. The conclusive statement of the case was that there were no major differences between the two battalions despite the difference in time of the implementation. Furthermore the article address a discussion if you can look at the battalions as complex adaptive systems, so the conditions to self-organize is present. Finally, the article suggests further studies that focus on how to improve the caseen_US
