Social antrhopologist Viggo Vestels doctoral thesis explores how cultural differences are handled and related to in social relations and life phase among youth in a multicultural suburb in the Grorud Valley, East side Oslo. A special focus is directed upon the role of popular cultural expressions in processes of conflict and integration. The project is based on two one-year long anthropological fieldworks, the first in 1993-94 the second in 1998-99, centering around a multicultural youth club. Contrary to the media images where youth of immigrant background often are associated to violence, crime, behavioural problems and the like, the thesis describes a milieu - that also include youth with Norwegian born parents - characterized by positive social relations and strong relations of friendship among the youngsters. The most spectacular expressions of such relations were elaborate greeting rituals, a common language repertoire where words and expressions from all languages represented were mixed while Norwegian is emphasized as the common language, and frequent use of music of immigrant background on the clubs disco. At the same time, expressions of transnational popular culture anchored in music (hip hop, r&b, soul and house/techno), films and sport, are cultivated as platforms for interaction and experiences of community. Through emphasizing similarities, while at the same time tolerating and valuating differences without insisting on clear boundaries, it is argued that these youngsters have developed a certain competence and elasticity in the handling of social and cultural differences among themselves. The picture, nevertheless, has to be corrected in so far as girls from more conservative Muslim families did not participate in this community. In addition to detailed empirical descriptions, a range of theoretically founded analyses, mainly based on the American philosopher Charles Peirces theory of semiotics, are developed.en
