Abstract
In discussions of qualitative interviewing, face-to-face interviews are often understood as the “gold standard” and other interview forms are evaluated against this. Researchers who use data from telephone and video interviews must routinely defend their choice of a “lesser” method and highlight (and lament) the shortcomings of their data. In this chapter, we argue that this type of thinking is based on methodological prejudice and that researchers who work qualitatively will benefit from a more nuanced view of the strengths and weaknesses of different interview methods. Based on extant literature and experiences from our own research, we discuss and problematize the idealization of face-to-face interviews as the “gold standard” and shed light on some key practical and methodological dimensions of relevance to researchers who consider using mediated forms of interviewing.
