SENSING WOOD REUSE OF WOOD IN AESTHETIC AND FUNCTIONAL WALL SOLUTIONS FOR INDOOR ENVIRONMENTS
Abstract
ABSTRACT
Research on the use of wood and natural materials in our surroundings indicates that they have a positive impact on our health. In our increasingly digital and technology-driven world, we need physical environments that promote health and well-being.This project is centered around repurposing wood waste into new panel and wall solutions for indoor environments, with aesthetics and functionality serving as the foundation for development. By extending the lifespan of usable materials, resource utilization can be optimized, and the ecological footprint can be minimized. Most of the wood waste used consists of short lengths of construction timber, which still possess a multitude of potential uses.Throughout this project, I have adopted both an artistic and practical approach, immersing myself in an exploratory and experimental process while working with various materials. These methodologies pave the way for thoughtful reflection and in-depth analysis, unveiling the potential for a diverse array of solutions. A hands-on approach, closely intertwining thought, hand, and material, has been essential in this exploration. The process has led to the creation of several concepts for wall solutions, keeping sensory experiences in mind. Acoustics, a new area of focus in this project, has added multiple layers of quality. The walls can serve various functions, from panels considering tactility and acoustics, to full or perforated walls for light entry. They can act as room dividers, create passages and transitions, or provide screening for specific areas. Furthermore, they can create a contrast to the surrounding environments. In my work with spatial design, I have connected sustainable solutions for the reuse of wood waste to the development of panel and wall solutions with aesthetic and sensory experiences. I can contribute to solving complex issues and bridging various disciplines to create sustainable solutions. The project’s approach can also be translated to other materials and solutions. With a background in professions related to space, this has tied the project together. As a designer, I hope this project can inspire others to address issues related to sustainability.
