Abstract
In this project, various qualitative research methods were used to understand the needs of patients after brain stroke and their therapists, as well as the factors involved in the rehabilitation process. The design proposal is named “Rehab Island.” To develop the design proposal, I initiated this project through a discussion with a neurologist, and throughout the project, qualitative approach methodologies such as interviews, focus group discussions and observation were followed for findings.

The goal of the project was to identify critical parameters after brain stroke rehabilitation and develop a virtual reality environment to address functional aspects of stroke rehabilitation, motivate patients to keep exercising, especially at home and enable therapists to assess patient performance. In this thesis project, a conceptual prototype was developed as an end result. To begin with, the rehab island concept is targeted to provide virtual reality rehabilitation for patients with mild cognitive dysfunctions and is conceptualised to scale up further in future. The final design proposal was evaluated for design intent, feasibility and functionality by occupational and physiotherapists from Oslo University Hospital, Aker and virtual reality product developers from Fornix VR Lab in Oslo.

Feedback on the prototype has been positive, with therapists and developers emphasising the importance of rewarding point based activities, the immersive island environment and other engaging activities. Therapists and neurologists have pointed out that brain injury is a complex issue, and virtual reality activities must be curated to address the specific needs of each patient for fruitful rehabilitation in future.

Key Words: Brain stroke rehabilitation, cognitive activities, virtual reality environment,
