Nursing shortages in rural areas A qualitative study on the highlighted strategies for recruiting and retaining nurses in rural Norway
Abstract
Background: We are facing a global nurse shortage, and the situation is worse in rural areas. Nursing homes and rural areas are often perceived by nurses as less attractive workplaces. The objectives of this study were to explore strategies highlighted by Norwegian nurse home managers in the recruitment and retention of nurses in rural nursing homes.
Research question: What kind of strategies do Norwegian nurse home managers highlight in the recruitment and retention of nurses in rural areas?
Method: This article has a qualitative design, based on semi-structured in-depth interviews with six nurse home managers from rural municipalities in Norway. The interviews were analyzed with thematic analysis.
Results: Three themes emerged: 1) Opportunities, 2) Flexibility, and 3) Job satisfaction. The findings illustrate the ongoing need for effective strategies that are aimed at recruiting and retaining nurses in rural areas.
Conclusion: The most significant strategies in overcoming the nurse shortage are the retention of current nurses and collaboration among interdisciplinary actors to develop a local guideline with effective strategies.
