In this thesis I explore how vocational teachers may facilitate student-active, motivating and professionally relevant education and training in line with the intentions of Norwegian vocational education and training (VET) and the competence needs of the different vocations in the educational programs. In the thesis, I use theoretical perspectives to illuminate different conditions that may contribute to a student-active, motivating and professionally relevant VET. The thesis has an action research design consisting of three sub-studies that each contribute to the overarching exploration of professionally relevant VET. The thesis is situated in previous research about Norwegian VET and national guidelines for VET. Intentions and current guidelines for Norwegian VET are analyzed on the basis of relevant research, and provides insight into what students, teachers, and instructors think about the quality of VET today. The three sub-studies are represented in the three articles of the thesis. The overall research question in this thesis is: How can VET teachers, through student participation facilitate motivating and professionally relevant education and training in line with the competence needs of working life and society? Article 1, which reports on the first sub-study of the thesis, concerns the professional relevance of one VET program and examines how students with different vocational interests perceive the teaching and learning in the program and what motivates them to learn. The main findings of the study show that many students do not perceive the first year of VET as relevant for their future occupations. The findings also show that the students’ possibilities to influence the teaching and learning activities they engage in is central in facilitating professionally relevant VET. This analysis of student experiences of education and training in the first year of VET constitutes the starting point for the second sub-study in the thesis (article 2), an action research experiment where I collaborated with a group of teachers to carry out a project that sought to develop examples of professionally relevant teaching and ways to involve students in curriculum development. Article 2 shows the process of developing examples of relevant and meaningful teaching and learning. Over a school year, I followed six vocational teachers and their classes in the programs, Building and Construction; Design, Arts and Crafts; Electrical and Electronic Engineering; Healthcare, Childhood and Youth Development; and Technical and Industrial Production. The teachers evaluated the process through surveys and conversations with the students. The results of these evaluations formed the basis of adjustments and changes in the plan for further exploration. The teachers granted students freedom and involvement in their own learning, but they also perceived the national curriculum as restrictive, and found it difficult to adapt it to individual learning needs. According to the teachers, the idea of challenging the students to interpret the curriculum and adapt the teaching and learning to their own needs, was a new way of thinking about student participation and adaptive education. Through the exploration, the teachers gradually changed their own teaching. While they used to plan the learning activities for all the students, they now sought to involve the students in the planning, implementation and evaluation of all teaching and learning to ensure professional relevance for all the students. Article 3 is an analysis of how the needs of the hairdressing industry might be met through the implementation of a new curriculum of a recent curricular reform (fagfornyelsen), in light of the results of sub-study one and two in this thesis. This third sub-study is based on an analysis of different national guidelines in the new curriculum for hairdressing and on interviews with teachers in the second year of the hairdressing program and instructors from the hairdressing industry to establish the needs of the industry. The discussion in this study thus relates to the expressed needs for competence in the hairdressing industry. The possibilities for meeting these needs are considered in light of the possibilities for making the education and training in the first year of the hairdressing program more professionally relevant, as suggested by the examples developed in sub-study 2. The competence needs also relate to the analysis of the new curriculum for the hairdressing program, and the findings of sub-study one and two. The results of the third sub-study indicate that communication, collaboration, and technical hairdressing competence are of particular importance for the hairdressing industry. In line with the new competence concept in the new curriculum, representatives of the industry held that critical thinking in different work situations constitutes an important aspect of professional competence in hairdressing. Flexibility and the ability to adapt to changes were also perceived as essential features for the profession to meet changing societal needs. The results show that the content and inherent flexibility in the curriculum for the first and second year of VET, contribute to the facilitation of education and training in line with industry needs, as these needs are expressed by representatives of the industry that participated in this study. In the extended introduction of the thesis, the results from the three sub-studies are discussed in relation to the development of a new VET to shed light on the overarching research question of the thesis. The overall results of the articles outline the competences VET teachers need in order to facilitate the students’ development of relevant knowledge and competence for work life and society. On the basis of the results from the three sub-studies in the thesis, the extended introduction focuses on VET teachers’ abilities to facilitate learning by developing approaches that are professionally relevant and motivating, yet within the bounds of the guidelines and policies of the new national curriculum (LK2020).en_US
