The theme of this study is Motivational Interviewing (MI). Through research on effective elements in parental guidance programs, The Core Child Protection Project (Kjernebarnevernprosjektet) has found that MI is one of eight elements that should be included in a knowledge-based approach. The families who will receive guidance are vulnerable families in the child welfare service. This study will therefore find out the usefulness of MI in family-oriented work in the child welfare field. The analytical question that turned out to be interesting was how MI can contribute to increased trust in the work with these families. Child Welfare Service of Gamle Oslo was given the opportunity to acquire knowledge about Motivational interview and exercises through the Core Child Welfare Project (Kjernebarnevernprosjektet). Out of the ten who received total training, I have interviewed seven supervisors from both the child welfare service and a team who work on assignment for them. The interviews were semi-structured and the information was reviewed through thematic analysis. The informants generally experienced great benefit from MI after a few months of testing. At the same time, they experienced some challenges related to, among other things, common understanding with the families. Linking the informants' statements to trust and how MI can contribute to trust proved to be consistently interesting. Trust linked to power gave the task another dimension in that the child welfare field experiences a power they do not necessarily always want to exercise. At the same time, power is inevitable and then it is important to see how one can work with families to avoid the experience of powerlessness to such an extent that it leads to mistrust. An interesting topic is how to take care of curiosity and user participation, which is important in MI, and at the same time claify a set of norms which is often required, in the field of child welfare. Motivational interview seems to be able to contribute a certain extent, as the path to the goal can be experienced better by being met with the attitude and communication techniques that Motivational Interview contains.en_US
