This thesis presents various theories that underpin literature reading in a Public Health and Life skill perspective (Folkehelse og livsmestring). However, the thesis points out that the basis for reading literature has two different discursive starting points - a culture-oriented and an individual-psychological one - which has consequences for which narratives are exalted. Furthermore, the thesis suggests that the curriculum's discussion of FoL (Public Health and Life skill) points to one of the two narrative themes, while the other may be toned down. This thesis presents a division of children's literature according to narrative themes that thematize key elements of FoL. Culture-oriented narrative themes present a subject who overcomes evil and saves his society. In the face of these stories, the child is given opportunities to live in an equally active role. Which can give potential for the child to give himself a similar role in his own life. This can lead to expectations of coping and positive perceptions about the future. This could be an important contributing factor to good mental health. The second is individual-psychological narrative themes where the constructive structure and the victorious subject do not gain as much relevance to the plot. Instead, attention is drawn to the character's inner mental landscape of thoughts and emotions. Such narratives often have an open or ambivalent ending, and trigger such a need for interpretation in a different way than the happy ending of the progressive narratives. They face issues and challenges that can be transferable to their own lives, or provide understanding for other people. The two narrative themes that are expressed in children's literature are driven by different discursive forces. The culture-oriented narrative can be placed within a didactic discourse where the intention is to transfer a set of values to the child through the exemplification and glorification of the hero. The sales figures show that culture-oriented stories are popular among children. This indicates that these stories may be adapted to the child's consciousness, and have entertaining purposes. Individual psychological-narratives show a therapeutic attitude towards childhood where the levels of conflict are on an inner level. This narrative theme seems to be characterized by the adult's consciousness because it is not as dominant among the bestsellers, but more prominent among the prize winners. Based on the theory behind the two narrative themes, the thesis writes out criteria for categorizing narratives into these two narrative themes. An analysis with these criteria shows that structure and theme are not detached from each other, but that they are connected. The thesis analyzes a best-selling and award-winning book with the designed criteria to show contemporary children's literature inequality and possible division into two narrative themes. The thesis finds both narrative themes important with regard to safeguarding childrens mental health in the modern classroom. There are also concerns that a therapeutic attitude towards the child, that manifests itself in both FoL and the individual psychological narratives, will reduce the space for the culture-oriented narratives. One type of narrative will not meet the needs of contemporary students for the literature alone, and the thesis tries to present the relevance both narrative themes may have related to children's mental health.en_US
