Master i estetiske fagen
The basis for this dissertation is the claim made by Åsta Rimstad, Associate Professor at the University of South-Eastern Norway that there is a dominating crafts tradition in the practical-esthetical subjects and that contemporary art is still absent from today’s teaching. This became the basis for a study of teaching practices related to contemporary art in the Education programme for Art, Design and Architecture (ADA) in upper secondary school. The emphasis on contemporary art in upper secondary school, as well as potential causal explanations as to why there is limited teaching of contemporary art, is also being studied. This is researched in order to find possibilities for actualisation through mapping of deficiencies and challenges found in the teaching of contemporary art. Using critical realism as a scientific viewpoint, this dissertation attempts to answer the following research question: What can teaching of contemporary art be and how can the properties of contemporary art be made available for teaching? In order to answer the research question, empirical data has been collected with the help of a qualitative method consisting of 3 semi-structured research interviews and a practical-esthetical survey through research through art and reflection-on-action. The collected empirical data from the research interviews is placed in context and discussed in comparison to previous research in the field, curriculae in Art, design and architecture and relevant theory on contemporary art. The results from the survey show that teaching practices of teachers in Art, Design and Architecture already incorporate several properties of contemporary art. By concretizing the presentation of contemporary art through a more concise language and terminology, the properties of contemporary art can be further actualized in existing teaching practices. There is room for contemporary art in the curriculae for ADA, but there is still a large degree of freedom of methodology which leads to each individual teacher having to prioritize the teaching of contemporary art themselves. The practical-esthetical work of the dissertation is based on selected theoretical anchoring, as well as reflections on collected empirical data in the form of semi-structured interviews and explores possibilities for application of the properties of contemporary art in students’ practical-esthetical work. The results of the survey argue that the properties of contemporary art can be made available for teaching through application in practical-esthetical work. This may lead to increased knowledge and understanding of the theoretical basis of the properties of contemporary art.en
