Abstract

Denne masteroppgaven handler om studenter med innvandrerbakgrunn, og hva som ligger bak deres valg om å ta høyere utdanning. I dagens nyhetsbilde blir ungdom med innvandrerbakgrunn ofte knyttet til frafall i skolen, og årsaken til frafall blir trekt frem. Samtidig er frafallsproblematikken et kompleks tema, som gir utslag på flere ulike felt innenfor sosialfaglige arbeidsområder, slik at det kan ha konsekvenser på både samfunnsnivå, samtidig som det kan få ulike konsekvenser for det enkelte individet. Masteroppgaven baserer seg en kvalitativ undersøkelse, og intervjuer med fem studenter med innvandrerbakgrunn ved utdanningsinstitusjoner i Oslo. Hensikten har vært å undersøke ulike faktorer som har bidratt til deres vei til høyere utdanning, samt valg om å ta høyere utdanning. Undersøkelsens funn viser at informantene i stor grad vektlegger noen hovedfaktorer når de forteller om hva som har hatt betydning for deres vei til høyere utdanning, samt valg om å ta høyere utdanning. Disse er foreldre, skolen, idrett og militær, mestring, mål for fremtiden og identitet. Herunder finner vi blant annet foreldrenes arbeidsforhold og akademiske bakgrunn, forventninger, bevisstgjøring av samfunnets økende krav om utdanning, emosjonell støtte og oppmuntring og økonomiske støtte. Innenfor skolen finner vi tilhørighet, lærere og rådgivere, medelever, møte med fordommer og å få riktig hjelpetilbud på skolen, samt blant annet selvdisiplin gjennom idrett og militær. I tillegg er viktige faktorer mestring og ulike mål for fremtiden, samt på hvilken måte identitet og identitetsprosessen har virket inn dette.

This master thesis is aimed at achieving an understanding of the reasons students with an immigrant background have for pursuing higher education. Mainstream media have a tendency to focus on the reasons youth with an immigrant background chose to drop out of school. The issues related to dropping out of school early are complex. Dropping out of school presents issues on both a societal plan as well as on a individual level. This is issue can be detected within a variety of fields within social work. The research was conducted with the use of qualitative surveys, and interviews with five students with an immigrant background. They were all students at Universities in Oslo. The aim of the research was to investigate different factors that have led the students onto the road leading to higher education, as well as to investigate different factors that have influenced their choice of deciding to actually finish a higher education. The main findings to be drawn from the research is that informants emphasizes a few key factors that have led the students onto the road leading to higher education, as well factors that have influenced their choice of deciding to attend a University. These factors were: parents, school, sports and military, coping, future goals and identity. The influence parents had was based on relationship to work and academic background, expectations, awereness of the need for education in todays society, emotional support and general encouragement, and economical support. The schools held possible influence through their sense of belonging, the role of teachers and advisers, fellow students, meeting prejudices and the access to support and help as well as self discipline through both sports and the military, In addition to this, important factors are coping and future goals, as well as in what ways their dentity and identification has had an influence on their choice.
