The theme of this study are fathering practices and «doing fathering». The study is based on fathers’ narrative about daily life in the family. I have researched father’s participation in caring practices and variations in fathers’ participation in caring practices, variations in fathers positioning and justification of their behaviour in upbringing of their sons. The study has two research questions: «Variations in parenting practices – how do fathers convey their participation in caring practices for their sons? What conceptions and means of understanding form the background for the fathers’ actions in caring practices for their sons? The empirical background in this study is based on a qualitative research design. A secondary analysis of seven research interviews has been performed based on May Britt Solem’s empirical data material from her PhD-thesis (2011). From the seven selected life-interviews, a number of analytical categories were established. These are directed towards how the fathers understand their caring practices, how they understand their sons and their reflections on their own significance on the children’s development. The study explores variations in fathering practices related to different socio-economic categories like; gender, length of education, association to the working life, marital status and ethnicity. The research work has mainly been structured based on the informants’ own thoughts and reflections on their own parenting practices. The research position in the study is a « bottom-up-perspective» in order to understand fathers’ caring practices. The study has an interdisciplinary approach. Bronfenbrenner claims that human evolution must be understood in the point of intersection between biological, psychological and sociological framework of understanding. The psychological concept of mentalization will be discussed. The capacity for mentalization by the fathers is understood as a part of context and parenting practices are understood from their context. The study is therefore in line with Urie Bronfenbrenner’s (1979) development-ecological understanding of children’s development. This study explored how fathers understand and give reasons for their caring practice seen in light of gendered ways of understanding and involved fathering practices. Analysis and discussion showed that the informants in this study have some innate and some «taken for granted» aspects connected to gendered understanding and conduct in their parenting practices. All fathers perceived that they had an important role in their sons’ lives and they emphasized the importance of having a good relation to their sons. By looking further into what the fathers emphasized, it was found that variations occurred in what they perceived as important, what they put emphasis on in the daily life and how it was practiced. Variations in the fathers’ length of education and the fathering practises was analysed and discussed in this study.language
