Literacy is a prerequisite for working in a modern text based society. That is why low reading activity among juveniles is a challenge. In this study with the research question What role does the transition from elementary school to middle school have in the development of reading habits and attitudes towards reading the change of conditions when students go from elementary to middle school are analyzed. With an institutional theoretic approach, the impact of school, family and friends are examined statistically and by conducting a QCA-analysis. The data that are analyzed are quantitative, obtained in a survey at 3 elementary schools and 3 middle schools in the municipality of Bærum, Norway. The analysis showed great variation in both reading habits and attitudes towards reading both by level and by school. The results indicate that schools have great impact, and that use of time for reading at school combined with interested teachers and good literature guidance might affect the students to read more and have more positive attitude towards reading. Schools where reading was systemized stood out positively in both elementary and middle school. The analysis also showed that a lot of students had trouble finding interesting literature, which had a negative impact especially for the oldest students.en_US
