Arenaen setter helhetsopplevelsen i sentrum.
The arena concept has the last ten years established itself in Norwegian culture and language debate, as a useful and descriptive expressions of artistic production based on a complex content, where interdisciplinary collaboration between art disciplines are central. Most arena projects are somehow linked to the public, and can be related to function and activity. The concept of the arena has developed along the art concept in general, where discursive practices and participation now are essential aspects of artistic activity and production. The arena constitutes an alternative exhibition space, where art is communicated to a broad audience. The task of this thesis has been to examine what role architecture and art production can play together in arena concepts, and how such cooperation can contribute in developing arena structures in line with cultural policy intentions. The investigation in this paper is related to two cases, Transformer and SALT, which are examples of outdoor venues for art and architecture dissemination in the public domain. The two projects both have the site as a starting point for the development of the arena concept, and interesting questions arises about the significance of art in public situations. The two cases also have interdisciplinary collaboration between art and architecture as a main topic for project development, this highlights the interesting issues related to strategies for such cooperation, and whether this kind of cooperation is important for the final artistic product. The three main areas 1) cultural objectives 2) place, community development, and local identity, and 3) interdisciplinary cooperation, form the basis of the theoretical frame-work and survey areas in this thesis. The arena puts the art experience at the center of dissemination. Aspects of organization interdisciplinary art-practices obtain other frames than the traditional ones, and new opportunities and expressions come to view- the arena becomes a vibrant artistic center of collaboration.en_US
