In this thesis, I have selected and analysed empirical material from the UiO research project GIDDER (Groups in Digital Dialogues) to explore how digital communication tools can mediate students' interpretations and meaning-making processes in encounters with contemporary art on museum field trips. Grounded in the theoretical framework and analysis, I propose the term interactive interstiece to describe such mediated encounters. The term is used to explain the interactions developed in relation to artworks. Interactivity refers to the interaction between students, between students and museum hosts but also between students and the digital communication tools. Interstiece is borrowed from Bourriaud (2007) who describes art as a “social interstiece”. Digital communication tools create a temporal aspect in the sense that they can facilitate the maintenance of meaning-making spheres across time and space. In this study, this aspect also implies an actor and participant perspective that encompasses both relational aesthetics and socio-cultural learning perspectives, with students seen as participants in a cultural community where meanings are created in relation to artworks. The potential of digital communication tools add another aspect to the relational aesthetics by maintaining the opportunity to participate in art over time and beyond the museum context. Based on this understanding, and using interaction analysis as primary method, I have empirically examined what happens in interactive and temporal interstices, exploring the meaning making opportunities and constraints that arise in adolescent students’ encounters with art on museum field trips. Based on the analysis, I have also developed some thoughts and reflections on how to apply the notion of interactive interstices as an approach in art education more broadly. My practical and aesthetic work is a visualization of these reflections, extending the implications of my study for both didactic design and for further research.en_US
