This thesis, Portrett i tiden, is written by Marte Lin A. Andersen, as part of the degree Masters in Arts and Crafts (120 credits), Subject 3, the master's (60 credits). The thesis is focused on the painted portrait, with an aim to say something about the portrait´s significance in contemporary art, and how the genre is used in schools. From this, the task is related to the outlined problem area; What is the significance of portrait painting today, and how can Oslo Museum's collection of portraits "Fjes før Facebook" (Faces before Facebook) be used to enhance the teachings on portrait in school? Through qualitative methods and hermeneutic approach I started studying portrait as such, before interviewing employees at Oslo Museum, Bymuseet (the Oslo City Museum), and one employee at a primary- and secondary school in the Frogner district. The interviews gave an insight into the two institutions and their approach to portrait as a genre in the visual arts. By interpreting these in comparison to each other, both similarities and peculiarities were discovered. The possibilities of the two institutions working together were also considered. From this case study it is tempting to conclude that there are many opportunities in a cooperation, where the current primary- and secondary school can have high dividends. By viewing the interview material in correlation with statements from professionals and artists in the field, the thesis also tries to answer the question why portraits? The portrait is examined from various angles; in a museum context in which the historical and art-historical portrait is of importance, and through an educational context in which the portrait is included through Læreplanen for Kunnskapsløftet 2006 (the National Curriculum). Based on the art exhibition Fjes før Facebook at Oslo Museum, Bymuseet the portrait is linked to the contemporary- and social media phenomenon Facebook. Facebook is such a key point between portrait genre and youth culture, and helps make the genre very current, especially in connection with the younger generation.en_US
