In this thesis I have examined the extent to which librarians perceive that the program in Library and information science is relevant to the field of document management. This issue has been viewed from a profession-theoretical perspective using theory of "professional practice." I have used the "qualitative interview", and have interviewed six librarians who are employed in Statoil's department for Document Management. The focus of the study has revolved around finding out how knowledge from the education is relevant to the training and tasks within document management. The results show that knowledge from the education to be relevant for both the training and tasks within document management. Knowledge from the field "Knowledge organization and retrieval" stood out as particularly important when considering cataloguing and classification, programming, database knowledge and retrieval systems. Meanwhile, knowledge from the field "Library and society", more specifically the master course Information organization and knowledge management, was perceived as especially central. It was also clear that librarians I interviewed used the knowledge system from Library and information science when they would perform tasks in document management. The knowledge system made the librarians able to make decisions about which method was best suited to perform particular tasks. My findings thus confirm that the program in Library and information science has characteristics that enable practical application of knowledge from the education in a document management context.en_US
