Sammendrag
In the project ö‚'Communication in case of dementiaö‚' the aim was to collect knowledge on different approaches and discuss experiences from the formal service system (geronto-psychiatric and geriatric units, teams and policlinics) and different levels of voluntary work within the Norwegian Health Association. The Norwegian Health Association have financed the project. The perspective of the person with dementia is highlighted, especially in the formal service system. The perspective of the family caregiver is predominant in the voluntary sector, but the basis for every helper is to take the perspective of the person with dementia. Knowledge and empathy for family caregivers` perspective is important as well. Family members cannot be expected to be professional helpers. Collaboration between family and staff and between the formal service system and voluntary services is highlighted. Both family and staff experience challenges in adapting their approaches to the person with dementia and to be flexible in ways of communication. For staff; teaching, consultation and professional collaboration over time is recommended to build communication competence.Communication in case of dementia is an arena for co-operation on different levels.
