Videre utforskes hvilke muligheter bøkene gir for samfunnskritisk tenkning.
This thesis examines which discourses that are present in secondary school textbooks, in their discussions of the global south and global north topic, and what kind of world perspectives this may create. To answer the question raised in this thesis, a critical discourse examination has been conducted of four textbooks, two old ones and two new ones: Matriks 8 (2006), Matriks 9 (2007), Relevans 8 (2020) and Relevans 9 (2021). The analyze has been concentrated on chapters dealing with colonial times and the First World War. Fairclough's analytical tools has been used to examine which discourses the textbooks (re)produce. The conclusion of the examination is that textbooks (re)produce the discourse of power, the discourse of legitimation, the discourse about "us and them" and discourses about racism, where each book are based on different discourses over the same topic. To illustrate, under the discourse of legitimation, Matriks 8 (2006) (re)produce a discourse of balance, while Relevans 8 (2020) (re)produces a postcolonial discourse. And further on, the discourses about racism, Matriks 8 (2006), Relevans 8 (2020) and Relevans 9 (2021) (re)produce the discourse «racism as a problem of the past», where Matriks 8 (2006) (re)produces a «new-orientalism» - discourse. In regard to critical thinking, it is without doubt that all the books may support developing those skills, however it will be depended on teachers, well skilled in social studies, who are able use the books as a base to ask socially and norm-critical questions.
