Flerspråklighet som ressurs for norsklærere

Abstract

Temaet for denne studien er flerspråklighet som ressurs, og oppgavens problemstilling lyder som følgende: Hvordan reflekterer norsklærere over bruk av flerspråklig kompetanse som ressurs i undervisningen? Oppgavens formål har vært å undersøke hvordan et utvalg norsklærere stiller seg til temaet flerspråklighet, og hvordan elevers transspråklighet benyttes som ressurs i det flerspråklige klasserom. Utvalget i oppgaven består av ti norsklærere i grunnskolen som har delt sine tanker og erfaringer fra det flerkulturelle klasserom. Denne oppgaven har et kvalitativt forskningsdesign med skriftlig strukturert intervju som metode. Oppgavens teoretiske tilnærming er tilknyttet sentrale begreper og teori relevant til temaene flerspråklighet og andrespråk i et didaktisk perspektiv. Innenfor arbeidet med temaet flerspråklighet løfter teorien frem en forståelse av ressursorientert skole og verdien ved flerspråklighet, hvor det legges fram både ressursorientert tilnærming og problemorientert tilnærming. Datamaterialet viser at norsklærere har en positiv holdning til flerspråklighet, et ressursorientert forhold til det språklige mangfoldet i skolen og aksepterer og inkluderer elevers kultur. Likevel opplever intervjupersonene det som utfordrende å ta elevenes transspråklighet i bruk grunnet få endringer iverksatt i skolen for å imøtekomme disse elevene. Noen av lærernes uttalelser tyder på at flerspråkligheten kun benyttes som et verktøy i norskinnlæringen, hvor resterende språkkunnskap får en redusert viktighetsrolle.

The theme of this study is multilingualism as a resource, and the study’s research questions sounds as the following: How do teachers in the Norwegian subject reflect on the use of multilingual competence as a resource in teaching? The purpose of this project is to examine how a selection of Norwegian teachers approach the topic of multilingualism and how their student’s translingualism is used as a resource in the multilingual classroom. The selection in this thesis consists of ten Norwegian teachers in primary school and lower secondary school, who have shared their thoughts and experiences in the multicultural classroom. This thesis utilizes the method of a written structured interview as a qualitative research design. This thesis’ theoretical approach is related to key concepts and theory connected to the topics of multilingualism and second language acquisition from a didactic perspective. Within the work on the topic of multilingualism, the theory highlights an understanding of resource-oriented schools and the value of multilingualism, where both a resource-oriented approach and a problem-oriented approach are presented. The collected data-material shows that the Norwegian teachers have a positive approach toward multilingualism, a resource-oriented relation to the linguistic diversity in the school that accepts and includes student’s cultures. Nevertheless, the informants find it challenging to use the student’s translingualism due to the few changes implemented in the school to accommodate these students. Some of the teacher’s answers indicate that multilingualism is only used as a tool in Norwegian learning, where the remaining language knowledge has a reduced importance role.
