Project background: Drug administration for pediatric patients demand specialized competence, as well as a different approach in comparison to adult patients. As the competence nurses obtain in the bachelor`s degree program is inadequate to administer drugs safely to children, the Master’s thesis aims to fulfill this gap, constituting an important work for safe drug administration. Purpose and research problem: Knowledge of associated risks will contribute to awareness and promote risk-mitigating measures. Organized training of new employees in safe preparation of children’s medication during the onboarding process is a measure that can prevent medication errors and improve safety of pediatric patients. Method: Quality improvement work based on the “Model for quality improvement”. A teaching program has been developed by applying the “Didactic relationship model”. Results: Based of thorough research in associated fields and topics of inquiry and four ensuing trial lectures the Master’s thesis proposes a locally adapted and knowledge-based training to secure safe drug administration to all pediatric patients. Conclusion: Teaching is a suitable method for competence development directed toward newly hired nurses in somatic pediatric hospital wards. Systematic teaching on drug administration can be a measure to strengthen the safety of children admitted in hospitals.
