The activity subject is central to the child-welfare education program. However, this field has not been the subject of research, and is described in the literature only to a limited extent. In this article, we present the findings from a study among child-welfare students about their views on the activity subject. We also asked the students whether or not they were able to use what they had learnt while they were on practical training placements. We discuss how we can understand utility, and based on the findings in our study we look at both applied and experienced utility. In addition, we discuss different variations and combinations of utility. We conclude that there is a need for further research on this topic, both as a subject in the curriculum and whether the competencies it leads to are practised in the field.
