Abstract
mennesket i tiden fremover.
utforskningen i avhandlingen.
This master thesis explores the material world as a point of departure to discuss mass
production and environmental challenges from the perspectives of general design education.
The increased production of manufactured goods and our consumer behaviours affect the
environment and the production of waste. The environmental challenges we face today will
almost certainly increase in the near future. Knowledge about our attachment to artefacts is
therefore seen as a possible advantage to increase the lifespan of artefacts and to slow
down mass consumption. A closer look at our relationships to things and how design education
can contribute to more sustainable consumption is therefore relevant. Reparation and
attachment to artefacts lies within the practical and aesthetic area of exploration associated
with the thesis.
This thesis seeks to contribute to insights within a complex and interdisciplinary field,
branching into philosophical perspectives on the throwaway society and also considering
social ethics and the positive possibilities that education can provide. Averseness connected
to care and understanding of the human role in the natural world is essential.
To address the matter at hand the following question were formulated: Which possibilities
for design education in general can arise by exploring human attitudes towards
consumption and attachment to artefacts?
A discussion of materiality as a concept and the possibilities that may be revealed
regarding the usage of the concept will be made. There will also be a discussion about
materialism from the perspective of taking care of resources in the world. Asking if the
concept of materialism deserves to be connected to a negative interpretation with a focus on
overconsumption and a throwaway attitude. General design education and attachment to
artefacts can be key factors in shifting attitudes towards artefacts and materialism in the
direction of sustainable development. The thesis build upon ideas from critical realism,
where the essential idea is to reveal the real world and try to point out underlying mechanisms
that can affect and create different phenomena. The thesis aim is to improve didactic
strategies for design education in general.
