dc.description.abstract2D:4D finger ratios are commonly measured manually. Previous automatic method s have relied on the fingers being spread apart f or successful detection. This study propo ses an improved automatic finger - r atio measurement approach that does not require the fingers to be spread apart. The approach comprises a two - stage binarizing algorithm. F irst , the hand i s separated from the backgr ound. S econd , the various fingers are separated such that a unique outline of the hand can be obtained and thus the 2D:4D finger ratio can be measured. The algorithm achieves accurate results o f 66% o n a test - suite of flatbed scans of two - hand images. Auto matic validation of measurement quality is also discussed.en_US
