This thesis deals with arts teachers' teaching practices, and how this practice can shed light on
issues related to the didactic foundation in culture schools, in the field of visual arts. I wish to
develop an awareness of art and the epistemological basis, with the idea that there is a
didactic potential in the approach found in culture schools. I have looked into the teaching
practice at two different culture schools where I have used observation for collecting
empirical data. In some of the observation I’ve had a participating part.
The thesis has a main approach on the didactic and theoretical part where the practicalaesthetic
work has been in a continuous dialogue with the research, and forms an archive of
embroidered motives from observations, as a Diary of the culture schools. It acts as an
independent work. The embroidered works stand in a reflexive relation to my research, and
together they form a basis for the thesis discussion. Theories of teaching strategies and codes
is used as an analytical tool in the thesis, and have formed the basis for the interpretation and
processing of the subject matter I have chosen.
